Abstract
Once Korea was divided into the South and North, the two countries have had their own political and social systems and conversation is rare. The exchange and cooperation in dental care is poor although oral disease is common. Periodontal disease is strongly related with the socio-economic status of its people. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to estimate the level of alveolar bone resorption in North Korean defectors through the analysis of dental panoramic x-ray to determine the condition of oral health in North Koreans and propose further actions. The digital oral panoramic view files of 984 North Korean defectors (average age: 33.3) in Hanawon (the settlement support center for North Korean Refugees) from June 3 to June 17 in 2019 were used in this study and interpreted by an Oral Radiologist. Data was classified as 1) healthy, 2) bone resorption within 1/3 3) bone resorption between 1/3 and 2/3, 4) bone resorption over 2/3. The ratio of healthy cases was 18.9%, bone resorption within 1/3 was 68.2%, bone resorption between 1/3 and 2/3 was 22.2% and bone resorption over 2/3 was 4.8%. Females showed a higher bone resorption ratio than males. Based on the results, the periodontal bone resorption of North Koreans is predicted to be severe and proper public action is needed. If exchange between South and North Korea begins, public policy about oral health should be established as a matter of urgency
